Preparing for Pregnancy: Getting Fit

We all know that exercise is good for us, but I sometimes forget how great it really is! NaturalGuy and I want to live to see our great-grandchildren, and while nothing can guarantee good health, staying active is the closest thing we have to a magic bullet.

Staying active is also important while preparing for pregnancy.Women who exercise during pregnancy are less likely to develop complications like gestational diabetes or  preeclampsia. They experience less anxiety and depression during pregnancy.  And finally, active women have easier labors and a faster recovery. If that weren't motivating enough, regular activity during pregnancy may benefit your baby even after birth.

The good news for me is that it doesn't take a lot of exercise to see real health effects. 30 minutes of walking a day makes a difference. I've found that wearing a pedometer has made me much more aware of how sedentary or active my days are - and much more likely to take a walk in the evening with NaturalGuy. I've also had a lot of fun branching out and trying other activities - hiking with friends on the weekend, trying a pilates youtube video, and heading to the gym for some weights. Still working on consistency!
